Text: Joshua 6:1,18, 19, 7:1
1 Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.
18 And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.
19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.
Joshua 7:1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.
Jericho was shut up, because of the children of Israel, ..none could go in or out. When the time came for Israel to enter the city, they were instructed to not take anything of the accursed things of Jericho for themselves, but that all the silver, gold, etc. only, ..were to be consecrated for the treasury of the Lord. Unfortunately there was one who disobeyed.
Achan’s secret sin was that he had not kept himself from the enemies’ accursed things. He instead had taken and hid the goods, against God’s instructions. Consequently God gave swift judgment and punishment for all who had touched that accursed thing, as He had warned. The message here this morning, is not meant to be a discouraging one, but to show us One who can give a way out, and cure of the dilemma of secret sins. All of us have been found in that place of secret sins. If you find yourself there, God has a message of hope ..out. It wasn’t available to Achan in this account. God illustrated here that He means business, and still does in this gospel day.
God will extend His mercy through Jesus Christ, and to all those who repent with remorse. For God is not like the judges of our day, who often have a final sentence of judgment to those pronounced guilty. It is not God’s will for us to be taken away to an eternal judgment. But it ‘will’ happen if one doesn’t repent of their secret sins without waiting to be caught in them.
Psalms 139:23,24 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Our exhortation to have eternal life, must be “search me” and see if there might be in me any wicked way. It is so we can separate ourselves from any secret sins, when He searches us.
